today, I was given a job to present to some students at Jakarta's 14 High school, the location will take me forever if I ride a car, so I decided to use the train with some of my friends. I don't actually understand how to get to the high school using public transportation from the train station, vice versa. I manage to get to the school by using an ojek (basically an Indonesian taxi, but uses motorcycle rather than a car).
after finishing the presentation, the three of us decided to use another way to get to the bus station since using ojek is relatively pricey, we decided to use angkot (basically a car that goes to a certain route like a bus, and you can go in and out anywhere between). But as I say, I don't know how things works around those area, so I ask the driver if he will pass the station and he says yes. so logically, I will went inside and wait until I saw the station then get out of the car. simple. Until I realize after 15 to 30 minutes that it was to long for a quick drive to the station. I ask the driver how long till I get to the station, and he just realize that I'm hoping that he will pass the station.he just instinctively said yes back then. I was far away from the station. there are 2 woman sitting before us, I assume they have a mother-daughter relationship, both of them are wearing cheap and old clothes, the mothers seems around 55-65 year old and the daughter is old enough to have a family. and headscarf. they are the local residents of the area, they told us to follow them to another station, far away from our location at the time, but it is the closest station. we agreed to follow her. the daughter told us that they will pass her destination to show us the station since going to the station requires going into an alley and is pretty confusing, I thought it couldn't be anywhere far from her destination since jakarta is massively crowded, the traffic is JUST. SO. AWFUL. and going back will really take your time.
we were waiting for our arrival at the station, we passed her destination, she showed us where she actually plans to drop out from the car, we feel that we should be close, but it was another 15-20 minutes until we arrive at our destination. we feel pretty bad that she was willing to take us to the station. as we went out of the car getting ready to pay, she told us that she will pay our bill. I really need to remind you that she is a stranger. heck, I don't know anything about her, not even her name. of course, we insist to pay our bill ourselves, but she insisted so much until the car left us. she insisted so much that refusing it will be considered as being rude. there are three of us, each of us are supposed to pay 6000 Rupiahs each, to put this into scale, a usual street food meal will cost you 12000 rupiahs without drinks. at a restaurant will cost you about 20000 rupiahs.
after our debate on paying the bills, I realized that there are no building that remotely look like a train station. none. we follow her into an alley that is relatively long alley, I need to remind you that we are walking with an old lady. after a 5 minutes walk I saw the station, it turns out that we are going from the back yet well known door for the station.
at the counter she told us where to go and which line does the train to our destination will arrive, then we says our goodbyes and then she left.
that is it.
she just left us.
thinking that she need to go back, find another angkot, wait another 20 minutes, then arrives at their destination, pay another bill, and walk another few minutes to be at their actual destination.
the three of us are undoubtedly comes from a more well funded, richer family and they probably are not able to send their kid to college. cut their budget for their kids highschool. I felt highly ashamed and intrigued at the same time.
I remember a concept/story/theory or some sorts:
Imagine you paying your parking fee on a mall, then you found out that a total stranger payed your bills for you just as a good gesture. you will surely felt happy, and you will probably pay it forward.
I'm not the kind of people to believe on karma or some sorts. but I do know, when you do something good and other people are happy of your good deeds, you they will be more happy and will influenced others to become more happy also and so on and so on.
another theory is six degrees of separation, a mathematician named Paul Erdos, he hypothesized that anyone on this earth have a link to everyone only by a six degree separation. so,
for example:
my friend (1 degree) have an uncle (2 degrees) that have a friend (3 degree) that have a sister (4 degree) that know a friend (5 degree) that know Michael Buble ( 6 degree).
now imagine, by doing one good deed, those good deed only need six times influencing other people, and that good deed will literally make human kind a better society. we live in a global civilization, we can actually help someone else's day by paying it forward
so, now, I'm paying it forward
so please, start a good deed whenever after reading this, you could literally make the world a better place to live in.
